Jaune

Jaune, whose real name is Jonathan Pauwels, is a stencil artist from Brussels. Since 2011, he’s been creating art projects that always feature the same primary characters: road workers, about forty centimetres tall. This recurring theme stems from his own experience at a summer job he took while a student in Brussels. From then on, he was able to experience how this profession was both essential and invisible in nature. In his compositions, Jaune stages workers outside work, in extravagant, funny and sometimes even absurd situations:  a battle against bin bags fought on cat-back, a character being carried up by five pigeons, etc. For Jaune, it’s a way of making passers-by aware of the importance of these jobs and bringing them into public consciousness in a playful yet subtle way, within the city.
