This fresco was created in May 2019 by artist Piotr Szlachta to mark the 450th anniversary of the death of painter Pieter Bruegel. Ten fresco offerings have been created, grouped together along a route known as the “Parcours Bruegel” in Marolles. Each artist was given the task of reinterpreting a work by the Flemish master.

This fresco was inspired by “Landscape with the Flight into Egypt, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, 1563, oil on wood, 37 x 55.5 cm, Courtauld Institute of Art, London, United Kingdom”.

Piotr Szlachta on his work: “The fresco represents a couple trying to cross the border of an imaginary, lush and welcoming Europe. A ferryman is waiting for them a little further away to guide them. Installed in one of the most cosmopolitan districts of Brussels, this work celebrates the movements of populations, as has been the case since time immemorial.”
