This fresco was created in May 2019 by artist Guillaume Desmarets to mark the 450^th anniversary of the death of painter Pieter Bruegel. Ten fresco offerings have been created, grouped together along a route known as the “Parcours Bruegel” in Marolles. Each artist was given the task of reinterpreting a work by the Flemish master.

This fresco was inspired by “The Hunters in the Snow, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, 1565, oil on wood, 117 x 162 cm, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria”.

Guillaume Desmarets on his work: “I was immediately attracted by the composition and atmosphere of this scene. Even though it is a scene of everyday life, a surrealist atmosphere pervades. I decided to focus on the hunters and their dogs. By retaining the compositional elements, I transformed the subject and the graphic aesthetic. The scene depicts rat hunters pursued by their quarry, all in a fluffy universe which resembles a dream. It’s a kind of surreal allegory of the absurd.”
