This fresco was created by Sudanese artist Alaa Satir as part of the ICORN (International Cities of Refuge Network) project. The project was implemented in Brussels by Passa Porta and Cartooning for Peace. The artist’s work, with its links to women’s rights, is a call to action in support of social justice and freedom of expression. ICORN is an independent organisation of cities and regions offering refuge to at-risk writers and artists. Its mission is to advance fundamental rights, including democratic values and international solidarity.
“The mural takes its inspiration from the physical support of a ramp, framing the journey of seeking refuge above all as a form of displacement. The composition uses human figures and birds to illustrate this movement”. – Alaa Satir
