Historique
Madame La Belge, a Brussels-based artist whose world is recognisable by her wide-eyed characters, depicts the municipality of Haren in her work entitled ‘De boottrekker & la paysanne’. Through monumental portraits of women, Madame La Belge illustrates, among other things, three emblematic aspects of Haren: the towpath along the canal, the cultivation of belgian endive and the rural side of the town. This fresco is also an opportunity to underline the importance of the role of women at the time and to honour those who were regularly called upon to pull the boats.
