Madame La Belge, an artist living in Brussels whose world is recognisable from her characters with wide eyes open to life, depicts the commune of Haren in her work entitled “De boottrekker & la paysanne”. Through monumental portraits of women, Madame La Belge illustrates three emblematic aspects of Haren: the towpath along the canal, the cultivation of chicory and the rural character of the town. This mural is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of the role of women at the period and to honour those who were regularly called upon to pull the boats.
